Compare commercial waste collection
Business waste is the contract most likely to have quietly doubled since you signed it. Auto-renewal and annual uplift clauses are standard in this industry.
Household waste is collected by the council and paid for through council tax. Business waste is not: you are legally required to arrange collection yourself, to use a licensed carrier, and to keep waste transfer notes proving where it went. That is the duty of care, and it sits with you, not the contractor.
The commercial reality is that this market runs on long contracts with automatic renewal and contractual annual price increases. Plenty of businesses are two or three uplifts into a contract they signed years ago and have never re-tendered. Re-comparing is usually where the money is, more than any single quote.
What it should cost
| What you are buying | Indicative UK cost |
|---|---|
| 1100L general waste bin, weekly | £15 – £30 per collection |
| 660L general waste bin, weekly | £10 – £20 per collection |
| 240L bin, fortnightly | £5 – £12 per collection |
| Mixed recycling | Often cheaper than general waste, sometimes free at volume |
| Food waste, 240L | £8 – £18 per collection |
| Bin delivery or rental | £0 – £15 a month per bin |
| Confidential shredding, per sack | £5 – £15 |
Prices vary widely by region and by how easily the lorry can reach your bins. A city-centre site with restricted access costs more than a business park.
What changes the price
- How much you actually produceMost businesses are on a bin size and frequency chosen years ago. A smaller bin collected more often, or a larger one collected less, is frequently cheaper.
- SegregationSeparating dry mixed recycling, food and general waste usually cuts the bill, because general waste carries landfill tax and recycling sometimes carries a rebate.
- AccessRestricted access, timed windows, or a bin store the crew must walk to all add cost.
- Contract length and the uplift clauseThe two terms that determine what you actually pay over five years. A low year-one price with an uncapped annual increase is not a low price.
- Waste typeHazardous, clinical and WEEE waste are separately regulated and separately priced, and cannot go in a general bin.
How to compare properly
Take these to every supplier. The answers are usually more revealing than the prices.
- Check the carrier is registered with the Environment Agency, SEPA or Natural Resources Wales — this is public and free to look up, and using an unregistered carrier is your liability, not theirs.
- Ask for the contract length, the notice period, and whether it auto-renews. Diarise the notice date the day you sign.
- Ask whether annual price increases are capped, and to what.
- Confirm you receive waste transfer notes, and how — you must keep them for two years.
- Get bin rental, delivery and exchange charges itemised rather than folded into the collection price.
- Ask what happens on a missed collection, and whether there is any credit for it.

Common questions
Can I put business waste in my household bin?
No. Waste produced by a business is commercial waste even if the business runs from your home, and disposing of it as household waste is an offence.
What is the duty of care?
A legal obligation to store waste safely, transfer it only to a registered carrier, and keep written records of every transfer for at least two years. Enforcement is on the producer.
Do I have to separate recycling?
Requirements are tightening across the UK, with separate collection of dry recyclables and food waste being phased in for businesses. Rules and dates vary by nation, so ask any prospective supplier what applies to your site now.
Why did my price go up without warning?
Almost certainly a contractual annual uplift, and it is usually buried in the terms rather than notified. It is the first thing to check on any renewal.
Still deciding between options?
Skip hire or a bin collection contract?
One is for a spike, the other is for a routine. Businesses lose money by using a skip as a bin, and by holding a bin contract sized for a clearout they did once.
